A completely automatic reduction gas kiln.

This kiln is at the Potter's in Residence program at Medalta Historic site in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This type of kiln automatically controls the insight-live.com/glossary/226">firing schedule and atmosphere inside the kiln. These kilns are very expensive but promise convenience for reduction firing. That being said, consistency is important in gas firing and that depends on multiple factors. Such kilns work best if the same type of load is fired repeatedly and results with each are applied to fine-tuning the firing schedule and settings for the next. A worst-case situation is where it is used once or twice by a new person that has never fired this type of device before. Another factor to consider is that this is not a downdraft kiln, the type most sought after by ceramic artists and potters. Fancy electronics can compensate somewhat for that, but it is an updraft kiln and wants to do what they do. Still, if this works for your production situation it will be like heaven compared to running an old manual kiln.
