M2 ST
Notes
*M2 is a mid temperature moderate plasticity smooth clay mined in Montana. It is used pure by a number of customers.
Fired bars show it from cone 04 to 6 (bottom upward).
Produced March 14/16 240 boxes pugged PRA stiffness for J.B.K. in Calgary, plus 250 boxes pugged ST stiffness for a customer of Ceramics Canada.
Production has recorded a moisture content of 18.10% for the PRA portion of this run.
Bar specimen #6 (fired to cone 6 .0), has tiny bubbles beginning to form on surface of bar, beginning signs of bloating .

Notes
*Produced Nov 25/04 25 bags @ 50 lb. each.
Clay is smooth and plastic on the wheel, generates a fair amount of slip. This could be used as-as for making pottery. The drying factor demonstrates care is needed for drying.
Some of the bars were discarded. These remaining ones show it from cone 1 to 7 (bottom upward).
Cone 10 ox. bar on the edge of bloating and deformed slightly during firing. Cone 6 bar also show signs of bloating (with tiny bubbles beginning to appear on face of bar). The cone 5 bar is just beginning to have a shiny appearance to it.
Was used in an early version of Alberta Slip .

Location

Notes
*Retest of the P4738 98 BGP run to confirm test results and compare alongside L3558 Scott clay which we are trying to find a suitable substitute for.
Clay at 24% moisture content was slightly stiff for making bars (a very high moisture content considering how stiff the clay feels).
A highly plastic clay (with high drying shrinkage; bars are warped and poor drying performance ). See photo of dried bars and DFAC. Soluble salts are low.
Cone 6 bar is melting (although not bloating ).
Cone 4 bar has begun to deform and has a shiny appearance but no indications of bloating either. A very stable clay when over fired!
Fired bars cone 06-2 show a classic terra cotta color progression.
