Notes

This fires with a Shino-like character because of its extremely high alumina content. Because it contains no clay it will settle immediately if mixed as a dipping glaze. However it can be mixed as a clayless suspension, that is, as a thixotropic gel. Either way, it will build thickness very rapidly when dipped into bisque - so dip it quickly.

This fires to a translucent glass. If white is needed add some zircon opacifier (e.g. 5%).

Perhaps the best way create a batch is to blender mix smaller amounts as a brushing glaze (with CMC gum), this affords good control of thickness (especially for beginners). Also adding 1-2% Veegum will help with suspension.

Add 5% bentonite to help suspend and make it more like a dipping glaze. Some attention is needed to make it thixotropic for the best application properties. The bentonite will help slow down drying, adjust its percentage if drying is to slow or too fast.

The chemistry of this frit is such that the more kaolin or ball clay added, the more glaze-like the chemistry becomes. It’s thermal expansion is very high this is guaranteed to craze on any clay body. At 15% it should work well from cone 04-2 or even higher. At cone 6 and for thicker application (without running), add more kaolin. For white add Zircopax, up to 15% or more. Zircopax will also stiffen the glaze melt to enable thicker layering.

The amount of crackle may be too much. It can be reduced by adding some silica to the recipe (e.g. 10%). Because it melts so well, significant silica can be tolerated.

Crackle glazes are most often understood as simply recipes that somehow form a crack pattern. But there is an advantage to seeing them in terms of a mechanism that is a product of their oxide makeup, or chemistry.

Crackle glazes almost always have very high levels of Na2O, and possibly K2O (collectively referred to as KNaO). These two oxides have the highest thermal expansion, by far, of those commonly found in ceramic materials. Feldspar is the key source. Not surprisingly, high feldspar (or nepheline syenite) glazes most often crackle.

While some KNaO is present in the majority of frits, some are formulated with high levels can have extremely high thermal expansions. Ferro Frit 3110 is an example, some raku crackle glazes have up to 90% of it! Fortunately, it is useful to create crackle glazes at any temperature.

This modified version produces a glossier glaze having a higher Si:Al ratio. This enables thinner application, the formation of a better glass and it will host a zircon opacifier.

Adjust the mix of nepheline and frit to move the fired appearance and character between the two extremes of natural thick Shino to thin glossy refined.

Like its predecessors it will need to be mixed as a clayless suspension or as a brushing glaze.
